Swedish Theory Test Rules and Passing Score

Learn how the Swedish category B theory test works, how many questions it has, how many correct answers you need to pass, how long a passed result is valid, and what you need before exam day.

The Swedish category B theory test has clear rules

If you are preparing for the Swedish driving licence theory test, it helps a lot to know the exact format before you sit the exam. Understanding the rules reduces stress and helps you focus on the right type of preparation.

The category B theory test has 70 multiple-choice questions. You must answer 52 correctly to pass. Five of the questions are sample questions, so the maximum score is 65.

Important rule change: if you pass the category B theory test on or after 19 August 2026, the result is valid for one year. A test passed before 19 August 2026 remains valid for four months.

Total questions The test contains 70 multiple-choice questions.
Passing score You need 52 correct answers to pass the category B theory test.

Result validity Passed on or after 19 August 2026: valid for 1 year. Passed before that date: valid for 4 months.

Before you take the category B theory test

Trafikverket requires you to complete both parts of the compulsory risk training before you take the theory test. The risk training must still be valid on the day of the test.

What to check before exam day

  • Complete both parts of the compulsory risk training.
  • Bring valid identification. If you do not have valid ID, Trafikverket has a separate identity-certification procedure.
  • Arrive early before your first theory test because your driving-licence photo is taken at Trafikverket.
  • If you are under 18 when you book, make sure the test is paid according to Trafikverket’s payment deadline.
  • Switch your mobile phone completely off inside the theory-test room.

Trafikverket currently advises arriving at least 30 minutes early before your first theory test so there is time for the photo and identification process.

How the Swedish theory test works

The Swedish category B theory test is designed to check whether you have the knowledge needed to drive safely and responsibly. The questions cover several important knowledge areas, not only road signs or simple right-of-way situations.

What happens during the test

  • Your identity is checked before the test starts.
  • You are shown how the computer-based theory test works.
  • You complete the test on a touchscreen computer.
  • You have 50 minutes to answer all questions.
  • You see your result on the screen immediately after finishing.

Important scoring detail

Even though the exam contains 70 questions, 5 of them are sample questions that do not count towards your score. That is why the maximum score is 65, not 70. To pass, you still need 52 correct answers.

What the passing score really means

Many learners search for the passing score but forget what it means in practice. A passing score is not only about memorizing random answers. It shows that you understand enough of the theory to drive safely in real Swedish traffic.

To improve your chance of passing

  • Study full theory topics, not only short answer lists.
  • Practise topic-based questions with explanations.
  • Repeat traffic signs until recognition becomes quick and automatic.
  • Work on weak areas like priority rules, stopping rules, speed, distance, and risk awareness.
  • Use mock tests to measure progress before booking the real exam.

How long is the result valid?

The validity period depends on the date you passed. If you pass the category B theory test on or after 19 August 2026, the result is valid for one year. You must pass the practical driving test within that one-year period.

If you passed the theory test before 19 August 2026, the previous rule still applies: the result is valid for four months. The change does not automatically extend older passed tests.

What does the Swedish category B theory test cover?

Trafikverket describes five main knowledge areas in the category B theory test. You should study the whole subject area rather than trying to memorise isolated practice answers.

Vehicle knowledge and manoeuvring How the vehicle works, driving characteristics, road conditions and risks connected to vehicle faults.
Environment How transport choices affect the environment and how to drive safely and with environmental awareness.
Road safety Speed, positioning, judgement, safety margins and adapting your driving to traffic and road conditions.
Road traffic rules Road signs, road markings, speed rules, overtaking, oncoming traffic, loads, passengers and duties toward other road users.
Road safety and behaviour Peer pressure, impulsive behaviour, attitudes to rules and other personal factors that can affect safe driving.

Practice questions are useful for checking your knowledge, but Trafikverket warns that online practice questions are not the same as the questions used in the official test. Understanding the theory is therefore more important than memorising answers.

Common questions about rules, score, and exam language

Can you listen to the questions?

Yes. The computer is equipped with headphones, but the audio function reads the questions in Swedish only. If you take the written test in British English, you can switch the displayed language to Swedish during the test if you want.

Can you get support during the theory test?

Yes. If you have reading difficulties, dyslexia, ADHD, autism, a language disorder or another need, you can apply for support such as extended test time, an oral test or a test with an interpreter. For category B, the regular test time is 50 minutes and an approved extended-duration test is 75 minutes.

Does passing the theory test mean you are finished?

No. Passing the theory test is only one part of getting a Swedish category B licence. You must also pass the practical driving test while your theory result is still valid. For tests passed on or after 19 August 2026, that validity period is one year.
