What are Risk 1 and Risk 2 in Sweden?
Risk 1 and Risk 2 are the two compulsory parts of Swedish risk training for a category B driving licence. Risk 1, commonly called Riskettan, focuses on alcohol, drugs, fatigue and other risky behaviour. Risk 2, commonly called Risktvåan, focuses on speed, safety and driving in different road and weather conditions. Practical skid training, commonly known as halkbana, forms part of Risk 2.
The official Swedish term is riskutbildning. Both parts must be completed and valid before the category B theory test and must also remain valid for the practical driving test.

What is Risk 1 (Riskettan) in Sweden?
Risk 1, also known as Riskettan, is the first part of compulsory risk training for a Swedish category B driving licence. It focuses mainly on human factors, behaviour and conditions that can make driving unsafe.
What does Risk 1 cover?
- Alcohol and driving
- Illegal drugs
- Medicines that can affect driving
- Fatigue and microsleep
- Driver attitudes
- Risk-taking
- Peer pressure
- Distraction
- Personal responsibility
Risk 1 is primarily about understanding why drivers make unsafe decisions and how those decisions can be prevented before a dangerous traffic situation develops.
Is Risk 1 a theory course?
Risk 1 is mainly theory-, discussion- and reflection-based. The purpose is not simply to memorise facts but to understand how behaviour, physical condition and decisions affect road safety.
What is Risk 2 (Risktvåan) in Sweden?
Risk 2, commonly called Risktvåan, is the second compulsory part of Swedish category B risk training. It is practical and experience-based and focuses on speed, safety, grip and difficult driving conditions.
Halkbana is included in Risk 2, but Risk 2 is more than skid training. The purpose is to understand the relationship between speed, grip, road conditions and the driver’s ability to avoid dangerous situations.
What does Risk 2 cover?
- Speed and road safety
- Reaction distance
- Braking distance
- Stopping distance
- Grip and road surfaces
- Slippery conditions

How long are Risk 1 and Risk 2 valid in Sweden?
A completed category B risk course is valid until the day your driving licence is issued or for a maximum of five years.
Do not confuse the validity period of Risk 1 and Risk 2 with the validity period of a passed theory test.
For category B theory tests passed on or after 19 August 2026, a passed theory test is valid for one year. This is separate from the maximum five-year validity of risk training.
