Right-Hand Rule in Sweden: Högerregeln Explained in English

Högerregeln is simple to state but easy to misapply. This teacher-style guide explains when you give way to a vehicle from the right, where the rule applies and which situations override it.

Quick answer

When two vehicle paths cross, the driver must give way to the vehicle approaching from the right, except where another priority rule applies. Transportstyrelsen confirms that högerregeln can apply at T-junctions, inside parking areas, in other open areas and even in terrain.

The hardest part of the right-hand rule is not remembering “right goes first.” The real skill is recognising whether the situation is actually controlled by högerregeln. Before answering a theory question, first look for signs, road type and the place the other vehicle is coming from.

What does högerregeln mean?

The legal starting point is straightforward: when two vehicle courses cross, a driver must give way to the vehicle approaching from the right, except in situations covered by specific exceptions in the Traffic Ordinance.

Giving way means more than simply “letting the other car go.” Transportstyrelsen explains that you must reduce speed in good time or stop if necessary, and you may continue only when doing so does not create danger or obstruction.

Exam thinking: the question is usually not “Which car is bigger?” or “Which road looks wider?” It is “Which traffic rule applies?”

Where does the right-hand rule apply in Sweden?

Transportstyrelsen explicitly notes that the rule applies broadly. It can apply in three-way junctions (T-junctions), in parking areas, in other open areas and in terrain. This matters because many drivers incorrectly assume that the car on the “main-looking” road automatically has priority.

If there are no signs, signals or other rules changing priority, road width, surface quality or the direction that feels “straight ahead” does not automatically cancel högerregeln.

T-junction example

Imagine you are driving straight on what looks like a continuous residential street. Another car approaches from a small street on your right. If no other priority rule applies, you may still need to give way to that car. The shape of the junction does not by itself remove the right-hand rule.

When does the right-hand rule not decide priority?

The Traffic Ordinance contains important situations where another duty to give way applies. One of the most important for learners is the rule when entering a road from certain places.

A driver entering a road from a parking area, property, petrol station, path or similar exit has a duty to give way to traffic whose course crosses theirs. Similar duties apply when entering from a cycle path, pedestrian street, pedestrian-priority area, bicycle street or terrain, and in some situations after crossing a foot or cycle path.

The right-hand rule is also not the rule you use when signs or signals clearly establish a different priority arrangement, such as a give-way sign, stop sign or priority-road system.

Why parking areas confuse many learners

Transportstyrelsen says högerregeln applies inside parking areas and other open places. But there is an important distinction between driving inside the area and leaving the parking area to enter a road.

  • Inside a parking area, two crossing vehicle paths may be controlled by the right-hand rule.
  • When you leave the parking area and enter a road, the entering-from-a-parking-area rule gives you a broader duty to yield.

This distinction is very useful for theory questions because the same two cars can have a different priority relationship depending on whether they are still inside the parking area or one of them is entering the road.

How to approach an unsigned junction safely

Knowing that you may have priority is never permission to enter blindly. Transportstyrelsen stresses that the right-hand rule does not remove the general requirement for care and caution.

  1. Reduce speed early enough to see into the crossing road.
  2. Look left, right and left again as the junction opens up.
  3. Be ready for another driver who has misunderstood the rule.
  4. Do not use your “priority” to force your way through a risky situation.

During the practical driving test, the examiner assesses planning and risk awareness. Approaching a hidden right-hand-rule junction too quickly can therefore be a practical-test problem even if no collision occurs.

A simple method for theory-test questions

When a picture shows several vehicles at a junction, work in this order:

  1. Look for traffic lights or an officer controlling traffic.
  2. Look for give-way, stop or priority-road signs and road markings.
  3. Ask whether any vehicle is entering from a parking area, property or similar exit.
  4. If no other rule controls the crossing paths, test the situation with högerregeln.

Frequently asked questions

What is the right-hand rule in Sweden?

When two vehicle paths cross, a driver must give way to the vehicle approaching from the right unless another traffic rule applies.

Does the right-hand rule apply at T-junctions in Sweden?

Yes. Transportstyrelsen explicitly states that the right-hand rule can apply at three-way junctions.

Does högerregeln apply in parking areas?

Yes. It can apply inside parking areas and other open areas, but a driver leaving a parking area to enter a road has a separate duty to give way.

Does the wider road automatically have priority?

No. Road width or the fact that one road looks more important does not by itself cancel the right-hand rule.

If I have priority, can I continue without slowing down?

No. Drivers must still show care and caution. You should approach so you can respond safely if another road user makes a mistake.

Learn priority rules as a system

Högerregeln becomes much easier when you compare it with give-way signs, stop signs, priority roads and the rule for entering from parking areas.
