0.5 The driving test (practical): assessment, safety check, common mistakes

Unit 0 / Lesson 0.5 — The driving test (Körprov): what is assessed & safety check basics

The Swedish driving test checks that you can drive safely, legally, and smoothly in real traffic. You will do a safety check, demonstrate special manoeuvring, and drive in both urban and rural traffic. This lesson shows what the examiner looks for and how to avoid the most common fail reasons.

📦 Unit: 0 🧭 Mapping: EX, TS, TR, FM, PF ⚠️ Exam risk: Very high (stress + observation)
Official structure (Category B)
Safety check • Manoeuvring • Driving in traffic
You must show safe decisions and good interaction with other road users.
Time allotted
45 minutes
Time pressure is real — drive calmly and plan early.

What you will be able to do after this lesson

  • Describe the driving test structure and what happens step-by-step.
  • Explain the difference between minor mistakes and a safety-critical mistake.
  • Use a simple method to pass: observe → decide → communicate → execute.
  • Know what a typical safety check includes and how to answer examiner questions.
  • Identify the most common fail patterns: observation gaps, priority errors, speed adaptation, and poor planning.

✅ What the examiner wants to see

  • Safety margins (distance, speed adaptation)
  • Observation (mirrors + blind spot + scanning)
  • Rule compliance (priority, signs, markings)
  • Flow (not blocking traffic unnecessarily)
  • Eco-driving (smooth, anticipatory driving)

❌ Common fail reasons (pattern)

  • Not yielding when required (priority mistakes)
  • Weak observation (especially near crossings/cyclists)
  • Speed not adapted to visibility/conditions
  • Poor lane positioning or late lane change
  • Stress decisions (rushing, “forcing” into gaps)

Common exam traps

Trap #1: “If I drive slowly, I’m safe.”
You must drive at a safe AND suitable speed. Too slow can also create risk if it disrupts traffic flow.

Trap #2: “I looked once, so it’s fine.”
The test expects continuous scanning (mirrors, intersections, pedestrians/cyclists) and clear “decision points”.

Trap #3: “If I signal, I can change lane.”
Signal is communication, not permission. You must check mirror + blind spot and only change when safe.

Trap #4: “I missed the exit, so I must turn immediately.”
Never do a risky late manoeuvre. The safe choice is: continue and reroute.

Video: Driving test example (watch before the checklist)

While watching, focus on: observation routines, speed adaptation, and how the driver plans lane choice early.

1) Start of the test: meeting the examiner & instructions
  • The examiner meets you and explains how the test will run and how instructions are given.
  • If you are unsure, you may ask: “Can you repeat that?” (better than guessing).
  • If no instruction is given at an intersection: drive straight ahead (normal default rule).
2) Part A: Safety check (Säkerhetskontroll)
  • You may be asked to show checks related to lights, tyres, brakes, visibility, or warning systems.
  • Answer like a safe driver: what you check, why it matters, and what you would do if something is wrong.
  • Key idea: you don’t need to be a mechanic — but you must show safety thinking.
3) Part B: Special manoeuvring (Specialmanövrering)
  • Examples can include parking, turning around, reversing, or controlled braking (depends on location).
  • What matters most: control + observation + slow precision.
  • Always check surroundings before moving (pedestrians, cyclists, small children).
4) Part C: Driving in traffic (stad + landsväg)
  • You will drive in different environments: urban and rural traffic.
  • The examiner evaluates your ability to follow rules, cooperate, and plan ahead.
  • Good driving looks calm: early planning, stable speed, clear positioning, and safe margins.
5) How assessment works (what “good” looks like)
  • Observation: mirrors + blind spot + scanning ahead (not just “one look”).
  • Positioning: correct lane choice early, stable placement, safe distance to cyclists.
  • Speed adaptation: match speed to visibility, road condition, and risk areas (schools, crossings).
  • Decision-making: yield correctly, never force yourself into gaps, avoid late risky manoeuvres.
  • Communication: signal in time, brake smoothly, show intention clearly.

Practical “pass checklist” you can use before the test

Observation routine Mirrors often + blind spot before lane change/turning + scan crossings early.
Priority discipline Identify: right-hand rule, yield/stop signs, main road, pedestrians/cyclists.
Speed adaptation Reduce speed earlier where risk is high (crossings, parked cars, poor visibility).
Lane planning Choose lane early, don’t rush late; if you miss, continue and reroute safely.
Manoeuvres Slow control + continuous observation. Never “rush” a reverse/park.
