Unit 0 / Lesson 0.4 — The Theory test (Kunskapsprov): format, question types & validity
The Swedish Theory test for Category B is computer-based and checks whether you can make safe, legal decisions. This lesson explains the exact format (questions, time, pass mark), what the test “really” measures, and how to avoid common traps.
📦 Unit: 0 🧭 Mapping: EX, TR, TS, PF, MJ ⚠️ Exam risk: Very high (format + time pressure)
Official format (Category B)
70 questions • 50 minutes • pass 52/65
5 questions are trial questions and do not count toward your score.
Validity after a pass
4 months → 1 year
Passed before 19 August 2026: 4 months. Passed on or after 19 August 2026: 1 year.
What you will be able to do after this lesson
- Describe the exact Theory test format (questions, time, scoring, pass mark).
- Explain what “trial questions” mean and why your maximum score is 65.
- Know what happens right after the test and how long a pass stays valid.
- Recognise typical question styles (risk decisions, priority, speed adaptation, vulnerable road users).
- Use a simple answering strategy that matches real exam logic.
Important validity change from 19 August 2026
The date on which you pass the Category B Theory test determines the validity period:
• Passed before 19 August 2026: valid for 4 months.
• Passed on or after 19 August 2026: valid for 1 year.
The longer period does not retroactively extend a test passed before 19 August 2026.

🧾 Format you must memorise
- Total questions: 70
- Trial questions: 5 (do not count)
- Scored questions: 65
- Pass mark: 52 correct (out of 65)
- Time: 50 minutes (regular)
🕒 Support options (overview)
- Some candidates can apply for a supported Theory test.
- Extended time for B is typically 75 minutes (instead of 50).
- Other support can include alternative ways of taking the test (case-based).
Common exam traps
Trap #1: “70 questions means you need 52/70.”
You need 52 correct out of 65 scored questions. The remaining 5 are trial questions.
Trap #2: “If I pass, I can do the driving test whenever.”
For Category B, a test passed before 19 August 2026 is valid for 4 months. A test passed on or after 19 August 2026 is valid for 1 year. You must pass the driving test within the applicable period.
Trap #3: “The safest answer is always ‘brake hard’.”
The test often rewards early risk reduction: adapt speed earlier, increase distance, communicate, and avoid creating a new hazard behind you.
Trap #4: “Road signs questions are only memory.”
Many questions are situational: sign + markings + priority + vulnerable road users + weather.

How the Theory test works (click to expand)
Video: Theory test overview (watch before the quiz)
Focus on: question format, time pressure, and how to read scenarios quickly.
1) Questions, scoring and pass mark
2) Time limit and “supported test” (prov med stöd)
- Regular time for Category B: 50 minutes.
- If you are approved for a supported test, you can get extended time (for B, commonly 75 minutes).
- Support is not “extra help with answers” — it is an adjustment that makes the test accessible.
3) What the Theory test actually measures
- Traffic rules: priority, intersections, lanes, speed rules, parking basics.
- Traffic safety: risk awareness, distance, speed adaptation, vulnerable road users.
- Vehicle knowledge: tyres/lights/safety systems (as relevant to safe driving).
- Environment: eco-driving choices and emissions basics (in realistic situations).
- Human factors: fatigue, distractions, alcohol/drugs and decision-making.
4) After the test: result and validity
- You usually see the result directly after finishing the test.
- If you pass the Category B Theory test before 19 August 2026, it is valid for 4 months.
- If you pass it on or after 19 August 2026, it is valid for 1 year.
- You must pass the driving test within the validity period that applies to the date of your passed Theory test.
5) Exam strategy (simple and effective)
- Read the last line first: what exactly are they asking?
- Scan for constraints: speed, weather, markings, signs, vulnerable road users.
- Choose the option that reduces risk earliest: slow earlier, increase margins, communicate.
- If two answers seem right, the best one is usually the one that creates more safety margin without causing a new hazard.
