0.1 Category B licence: what you may drive

Unit 0 / 0.1 — Category B: What you may drive (Sweden)

This lesson explains what a Swedish Category B licence covers: vehicle limits, passenger limits, and the towing logic for B vs B96 vs BE. Everything here can appear in the theory test.

📦 Unit: 0 🧭 Mapping: EX, TR ⚠️ Exam risk: High (weights & towing rules)
Key numbers to remember
3,500 kg car • 750 kg trailer • 4,250 kg B/B96 cases • 3,500 kg BE trailers
These values are used in many exam questions.

What you will be able to do after this lesson

  • Explain what vehicles Category B covers in Sweden.
  • Identify the 3,500 kg limit and the 8 passenger rule.
  • Apply towing rules for B, B96 and BE in typical exam scenarios.
  • Differentiate total weight vs actual weight (why exams prefer “total weight”).
  • Avoid the most common towing mistakes that cause students to fail.

🚗 Category B — vehicle rule (must know)

  • Passenger car/light truck: maximum total weight 3,500 kg.
  • Maximum 8 passengers (excluding the driver).
  • Trailer rules depend on licence and the car’s technical limits.

🧠 Exam logic — “total weight first”

  • Most licence questions use total weight (totalvikt), not actual weight.
  • Even if the trailer is empty, the question may still use the trailer’s total weight.
  • Always check: car total weight, trailer total weight, and combined total weight.

Common exam traps

Trap #1: “If the trailer is over 750 kg, you always need BE.”
Not true. In many cases B or B96 is enough depending on the combined total weight.

Trap #2: Mixing up 3,500 kg (B) with 4,250 kg (B96) and thinking it changes the car limit.
B96 mainly affects the combination, not the basic Category B car limit.

Key rules (click to expand)

1) Towing with a normal B licence (core exam rule)
  • You may drive a car/light truck up to 3,500 kg total weight.
  • You may tow a trailer up to 750 kg total weight.
  • If the trailer’s total weight is over 750 kg, you can still tow it with B if the combined total weight (car + trailer) is at most 3,500 kg.
  • Even if your licence allows it, the car’s technical limits (max trailer weight / train weight) must also allow it.
2) B96 (Extended B / Utökad B)
  • B96 allows a heavier combination: car + trailer combined total weight up to 4,250 kg.
  • B96 is often tested because students think it is the same as BE (it is not).
  • Technical limits on the car still apply.
3) BE (Car with heavy trailer)
  • The towing vehicle must be a passenger car or light truck with a total weight of at most 3,500 kg.
  • You may tow one or more trailers, but their combined total weight must not exceed 3,500 kg.
  • BE does not set a separate combined total-weight ceiling for car + trailer; however, the car’s technical maximum trailer weight and maximum combined gross weight always apply.
4) The numbers and exceptions you must not confuse
  • 3,500 kg → Category B car total weight limit
  • 8 → max passengers (excluding driver)
  • 750 kg → “simple” trailer limit often used in questions
  • 4,250 kg → B96 combined total-weight limit; it can also occur with normal B when the trailer total weight is at most 750 kg
  • 3,500 kg → maximum combined total weight of the trailer or trailers with BE

Exact B, B96 and BE limits

Important exception: normal B does not always mean that car + trailer must stay below 3,500 kg. If the trailer’s total weight is at most 750 kg, a Category B car with total weight up to 3,500 kg may tow it, so the combined total weights can reach 4,250 kg.

B — alternative 1

  • Car/light truck total weight: max 3,500 kg.
  • Trailer total weight: max 750 kg.
  • The combined total weights may therefore be as high as 4,250 kg.

B — alternative 2

  • The trailer may have a total weight above 750 kg.
  • Car + trailer combined total weight must then be at most 3,500 kg.

B96 — extended B

  • Car/light truck total weight: max 3,500 kg.
  • Car + trailer combined total weight: max 4,250 kg.
  • B96 extends the combination limit; it does not allow a heavier towing vehicle.

BE

  • Car/light truck total weight: max 3,500 kg.
  • One or more trailers: combined total weight max 3,500 kg.
  • The registration certificate’s technical limits remain binding.
Three separate checks: (1) your licence category, (2) total weights used by the licence rules, and (3) the car’s technical maximum trailer weight and maximum combined gross weight. All three must allow the combination.
